Meet Phoenix! This intelligent, goofy girl is full of personality and keeps her foster family smiling every day. She absolutely adores her people and, if given the choice, would happily spend all day curled up in someone's lap. Phoenix is incredibly snuggly and affectionate, often pawing at her favourite people to ask to be picked up or invited onto the couch. She loves tummy rubs, especially from the people she trusts, and has a wonderfully silly side that shines through as she settles in. Whether she's rolling onto her back for attention, crying happily while she plays, or sneaking off with a sock, blanket, or piece of laundry she wasn't supposed to have, Phoenix has a charming personality that's impossible not to love. She also enjoys destroying stuffies, watching the world from the window, and snacking on favourites like cheese, hot dogs, and wet food.
Phoenix is a smart dog who is growing in confidence every day. While she is still adjusting to new experiences, she has already shown that she can handle moderately busy neighbourhoods and busy streets without much concern. She's generally quiet in the home, showing curiosity about sounds outside rather than reacting to them, and she even appears unfazed by thunderstorms. She loves her crate and settles comfortably there, though she may occasionally cry for a few moments when left alone. Phoenix is currently working on potty training and continues to make good progress. She has met a 9-year-old child and absolutely adored her, happily following her around and soaking up pets and attention. Given her sensitive nature, she would likely do best with older, dog-savvy children who can respect her boundaries and help her feel safe.
Phoenix has also shown that she can be friendly with other dogs. She currently lives with a resident dog and enjoys walking alongside them, though she has displayed some territorial behaviours in the home and may ultimately be happiest as the only dog. She can occasionally be stubborn and likes to have opinions about where and when a walk should happen - if she's feeling overwhelmed or simply disagrees with the plan, she may plant herself firmly on the ground and refuse to continue unless it's in the direction she'd prefer! Despite this, she's learning and becoming more confident with each new experience.
Phoenix's biggest challenge is her fear of men inside the home. While she has shown curiosity toward men outdoors and will often approach to sniff them, she becomes much more anxious around men indoors and will growl when she feels uncomfortable, particularly if they approaches her or make eye contact. She has shown that she can take treats from a male foster when interactions are calm and low-pressure, which is an encouraging sign. Because of this, Phoenix would do best in a female-only home or a home with both women and men who are committed to taking introductions very slowly and allowing her to build trust at her own pace. With patience, understanding, and continued positive experiences, Phoenix's confidence continues to grow. She is a truly special dog whose affectionate, funny, and loving personality makes every step of the journey worthwhile.
